Civilized Society

rek9ceanApathy and indifference does more harm to a society than any war could hope to accomplish.

The next time you pass by a beggar, stop and think about what that person has to endure on a daily basis.

They are told by people to get a job. Yet most employers will not hire a person without an address and phone number.

They are told by the rich they are lazy. Yet it is the rich who do nothing, create nothing, and hoard everything.

They are ignored by every day people as they go about their business. Yet people complain that they don’t know how to help. Try talking to, or listening to the story these people have to tell.

We are all people, and we all have feelings. Those of us fortunate enough to have a place to call home, food in our stomachs, we are the fortunate ones. Though most of us do not have the massive wealth we desire, we do have enough to spare a little for those who truly need it.

Right now, there are people in the streets, sleeping in parks, underpasses, and in boxes in the alleys. They are people too. They have a story, they have feelings, and they have hopes. Unlike us however, many of them have a bleak existence. One filled with a dismal future, and an unblinking eye to the harshness, and cruelty of the so-called ” Civilized ” world.

So the next time you pass by a homeless person, or a beggar on the street. Stop to think for a moment. Imagine yourself homeless, hungry, and and so broken spirited, that even your ego, and self esteem are worth far less the small bit of money you would get if you sold it to a stranger in the form of begging for a bit of his pocket change. Imagine spending day after day hoping to get enough to feed yourself. praying not to get beaten up or harassed while sleeping at the park. wishing that the police wouldn’t shoo you away from the alleys, and underpasses that serve as your bed. Imagine waking up every day to this life. Imagine that there is little hope for a better future.

Once you’ve thought about this carefully, and put yourself into their shoes. Look them in the eye and tell them that you can’t spare the few coins in your pocket. Tell them that their suffering, and their unabashed shamelessness isn’t worth your time. Tell them that their story has no meaning, and the cruelties of our ” civilized ” society are as it should be.

If you truthfully can. Then you aren’t civilized. While he merely begs for your change, you should be begging for his forgiveness. His worth far exceeds yours.  homeless_man_on_street
